Career change Journalism to Technical Writing What is different about tech writing and how would I prepare

My undergrad degree is in Journalism/Philosophy. I'm very Web savvy and good at researching/writing. But in my career now I'm a community reporter. Can a technical writer out there tell me what's different about their career and how this jump can be made?

What can I expect from a career in technical writing

I have done some research, but am interested to know what it's like straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I would love to know true salary expectations for someone starting out in this field, as well as a detailed job description. I am getting ready to declare my major (BA English w/ emphasis on technical writing) so any info that is provided from your personal experience would be greatly appreciated!

A few very short questions about a technical writing career

I'm a recent graduate with an MA in English, and I'm considering a career in technical writing. I have a few questions about it that I hope the Y! Answers community can answer for me: *Is tech writing a 9-5 job most of the time, or is it a "flexible hours" kind of thing? *I know that tech writers usually need to have some expertise in what they're writing about (IT, medicine, etc.), but as a recent graduate who hasn't been planning on this, I don't think I can claim any particular expertise yet. How do I go about building it? *Finally, is this a geographically-concentrated type of job (i.e. like publishing, where 90% of the jobs are in NYC), or are there jobs available in a number of states? Thanks!

How is Technical writing as a career

Can you please explain what it is really about. The growth in it and all. And the colleges. I am in India so answer accordingly. I have completed my schooling just now and considering different options. I am going for a degree in engineering but still keeping more options open.

Technical Writing career switch

I have a BA in Communication and previously worked in Media/Athletic relations for 5 years. I currently work in sales for a wireless provider and despise my job. I would like to get back into writing and Technical Writing has caught my attention. I have two questions for anyone with experience in the field. 1. Do I need to get a certification or a masters in Tech Writing to get my foot in the door? 2. Would joining the Society for Technical Communication be to my advantage (i don't want to cough up the fees if they aren't necessary) I appreciate any information.

Should I peruse a career in Technical Writing

I like technology and writing. So technical writing seems like a good bet. Based on what I know so far about the field it pays relatively well, it is in demand (so good chance of landing a job after college), and I heard it is relatively stress free because most work at home. I'm looking for a career that is not overly strenuous and will take away my private time. A job that pays well and is not too hard to land a job in. And is a job I can enjoy. I'm a junior in High School and I need to start thinking of what I want a career in. College applications are due in the fall. So what are some things I show know about technical writing, and is it a job that I should pursue.

I am passionate about a career as a Technical Writing Expert in sw MNCs How do I start What r the prospects

I did my PG in Computer Science but ever since worked as a senior faculty in the English Dept. of a leading Coaching Inst. offering quality tutorial services for competitive exams. Subsequently, I developed a strong passion for building a career in Technical Writing in Corporate MNCs (both s/w and HR) and I strongly believe that I possess the linguistic sine qua non which can place me at an entry level in the field. But I am keen on knowing how I can make a lucrative career for myself out of Technical writing and also the essential requirements for a long, productive working stint in this profession. I am basically looking for placement opportunities in the US. Kindly provide info along with useful job websites w.r.t. the above and a brief explanation of the Industry prospects of this profession. Thanq!

Career Advice Technical Writing

Okay so I have just recently graduated from high school and I need to start working towards a degree. I've realized that I would love nothing more than to write for a living, but there is no money to be made in it. So I want to do technical writing in order to support myself. Well I don't know where to go from here. I would like to eventually get degrees in English so I can fall back on teaching as an old coot, but at the same time I know that I need to have technical knowledge in order to do technical writing. The community college that I can afford doesn't offer English as a major but does offer degrees/certifications in computer programming/system networking, as well as a certificate in tech. writing. So here is the question for you tech writers, or anyone who may have advice: I know that I need the technical writing certification, but should I take the time to get a degree in computer information systems? Or should I just get a certification and move onto a real college to star on my BA in English? Any additional advice on Tech. writing or my over ambitiousness would also be appreciated. Please feel free to instill reality into my young virgin mind! Thanks!

How do you start a writing career and quickly see profit

I love writing but have been published once when I was in sixth grade. ( I'am now much older) I need to be able to make a little profit but I'am confused about who to write for. I've looked in several different magazines but the competition seems rough considering that I do not have any clips. I 'am struggling with how to start and have overwhelmed myself with technical writing, copywriting, etc. Any help is much appreciated.

Looking for resume advice for a career in writing

As I search for a career in technical or copy writing, I find that my resume seems to be tripping me up. Would anyone, particularly those who have been successful in writing, be willing to share tips about successful writing resumes?

What would a technical writer major in

I've been looking into the technical writing career and I wanted to know more about it. I would also like to know what I can do for college classes. Anything else I should know about this career would be greatly appreciated.

Should I get a technical writing certificate and if so from which institution

I am interested in becoming a technical writer and am curious about certification programs. A little bit about my educational and work experience: I have a BA in English Literature and minors in History and Professional Writing from the University of California, Santa Barbara (graduated in 2005). By the end of this year I will have finished a Skills Competency Award in Technical Writing from Santa Barbara City College. This program is a bit of a joke—I haven't learned too much so far and I'm not sure if anyone will be that impressed with it, as it's from a community college. For the last three years I have worked as an editor at a nontechnical reference publisher. Although I'm not planning to leave anytime in the near future, I am seriously considering working toward a technical writing career, as this pays much better than publishing. I am also thinking of starting my own writing/editing business, providing editorial services to businesses on a contract basis. So these are my questions: 1. If I wanted to become a technical writer, should I seek additional certification? How important is certification in this field? 2. If I should get additional certification, where should I get it from? Are there any schools that offer certificates that are particularly prestigious? The program MUST be online, so that limits my options somewhat. 3. Of the few places I've looked at so far, the certificate offered by the University of California, Riverside Extensions Program seems like it might be the best. The courses seem pretty high-level and being a UC I would imagine the certificate would look good on a resume. Does anyone have any experience with this program?

How to switch from software to pharmaceutical technical writing

I am currently a technical writer for a software company in the mobile technologies industry. I am young and early in my career and see growth in the pharmaceuticals sector in my career time, and so would like to switch into technical writing for a biotech/pharmaceutical company. I think the software industry is slowly dying. How do I go about making this transition? Will my experience in software technical writing automatically translate, or will employers be seeking any additional skills? Thanks in advance for your help!

Would a course in technical writing in english fetch a good paying job

I am 28 and expecting a child. I want to take up some course in my local community college which can fetch me a job later. What kind of job can i get with a course in technical writing in English? Is it a good option to start a career?
