Which degree would be better to be a book critic? A journalism degree or a creative writing degree?

Ever since I was little I wanted to become a book critic. In a couple of years, I will be entering college. I have been reviewing different degrees and programs for college. I've narrowed it down to journalism and creative writing. Which one would be better for me for the career I have in mind?

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

Actually a degree in Rhetoric, English lit, American lit or another literature may serve you better than a creative writing degree or a journalism degree. Take classes in those areas or make those your minors.

Answer 2

I agree with Okai. The best option would be considering a degree in English Literature, OR English. These will enable you to analyse the book's context - which a Book Critic needs to do with each project. If your college doesn't offer these two majors. Then speak to your faculty advisor, and explain your main career goal. I'm sure they'll be better suited to give you proper information on what your college offers, and possibilities getting into that field of interest. Best of luck.

Answer 3

Neither. Experience is the key to becoming a good book critic. Read, read, read and then write critiques. Have you approached your local newspaper about submitting book reviews? Or your local radio or TV station? How about your college newspaper - would they accept submissions? Once you have a portfolio, it becomes easier to get additional work.
