I want to work towards a career in technical writing, I have a college degree in English but I do not feel sufficient with that? What more can I do? Are there enough opportunities for technical writers? Where can I begin with no experience? I have been looking for volunteer work as a technical writer but couldn't find any? please suggest something. My State university has a 2 credit program in Grant writing and research writing, If I take that up will it help?

I thought that to become a technical writer what you need is a science/engineering degree, not an english one...? So you may want to at least take some courses in the area you want to write for.

You can definitly be a technical writer! You DON"T need an engineering degree! Don't listen to that guy! If you had an engineering degree, you would be an engineer. English is a good degree for this. There are lots of oppertunities for technical writers. Grant writing and research writing might help. What's even better is technical courses in computer science, and engineering, etc. Goodluck!
