There are a number of different types of journalism to pursue. There is Sport, Industrial, Crime & Police rounds, General, Parliamentary, Economic, Fashion, Foreign news and also being a "foreign correspondent" being based overseas. War correspondents are foreign correspondents.
There is Broadcast journalism (Radio and TV), magazine, local newspaper, City newspaper and National newspaper.
In High school you need to concentrate on your English plus depending upon what area you wish to enter/pursue, I would also do economics, politics, a bit of legal studies and plenty of history (these would be essential for General reporting, Parliamentary and Economics plus being a Foreign correspondent). A second language, and possibly a third language would be essential for being a foreign correspondent as would History of the areas where you hope to work.
At university I suggest a journalism degree as your major with your minors in the areas that you wish to pursue. Answer 2
Agree with everything listed above. I would like to add, you should try to get a job at your local paper, TV, or radio station. A lot of the basics come from first hand experiences.
If you don't/can't work, you can always drop an e-mail or call the local media and find out what route they went to give you some ideas. Best of luck. << GO BACK to questions
