Is a career in Journalism really worth it?

For me, college is right around the corner. And with the budget cuts, I HAVE to declare my major @ State. I always wanted to start my own magazine to educate teenage girls about social issues in the world instead of reading gossip. So I'm planning on getting a double major on business management & journalism. Is it really worth it? I don't want to go with this career if I'm not going to be able to do what I WANT. I don't want to write for a newspaper.

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

ur probably going to have to get experience in a newspaper first, u cant just set up a magazine and have it succeed out of the blue and u cant rely on ur business idea as being ur only plan. be prepared to work ina newspaper or whatever and getting experience and have ur idea as a long term goal. or even apply for a job in a magazine that does deal with these issues if there are any.and by the way, most girls WANT celebrity gossip and make up tips so ud have to find a way to attract them to stuff that actually matters. yes journalism would be worth it if u love it anything is worth it. but are you actually interested in doing it? if so, go into it and get ur degree and then start thinking about all the rest of it.

Answer 2

if you want to start your own outlet, you can't operate in a vacuum but you will have to convince others that you are capable and worthy of their investment. No bank is going to loan you money and no sponsor will want to give you their business if you have no previous media experience. having newspaper experience looks GREAT on any resume and lots of people in very high places are former newspaper reporters. remember, no one does the same job for their entire career anymore. the world is changing so fast that you have to reinvent yourself every few years. so think about what will give you the best launching pad overall.
