If I major in marketing, could I get into a public relations career?

The marketing degree would be a business degree with a concentration in marketing, and I would most likely minor in mass communication. I am unsure if I want to go into a marketing career or a public relations career, but I feel the the marketing major covers more. If I were to change my mind later, I believe that it would be easier to major in a marketing and get a career in public relations than it would be to major in public relations and get a career in marketing. Am I correct?

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

That sounds about right to me.

Answer 2

The answer is yes! You entered the first step, which is paying for the right to learn about Marketing and Public Relations, as you do that do the step most students skip which is step two, work for free to learn about Public Relations, Call Agencies ask for an internship and offer your services. Be Persistent and follow Up, if you do this the supervisors will see a star in the making, after all the story you will be selling is yours. I think of the story of Bobby D'biasio, Public Relations Director for the Cleveland Indians, He wrote to the PR Department every day for 2 years asking for an internship, and worked his way up to Director his first or second year. It is the only job he has ever had. To achieve the uncommon you must do uncommon things! Marketing Lesson number 1. Go for it!!!

Answer 3

For sure. Seems to me that they both go hand in hand. Make sure to intern for pub relations firm.
