How do I get started in a magazine journalism career?

I'm looking to pursue a career at a fashion magazine like Seventeen, Cosmo, and Elle. I'm planning on studying Journalism in college but should I study fashion as well? I'm in my junior year of High School and I am looking at colleges but I need some advice on which colleges to look at. I realize it is my decision, but i would like some advice that's actually helpful

Answer 1

i cant help you with that im sorry, that is your decision

Answer 2

Studying fashion would be a HUGE plus and most likely be the best route to go. If you're a strong student, you could always do a double major in both journalism and fashion. Most colleges don't require a minor if you double major, so you won't completely overburden yourself. However, if you can handle a double major AND a minor, you'd more than likely be set. I'd say double major in journalism and fashion and minor in something like practical writing or the like. I can't really help you with what specific colleges to look at, except for telling you to find one that has a decent program geared toward what you want to study.

Answer 3

I agree with another answer here---it would be best to take both journalism and fashion. However, I think a major in journalism or communications and a minor in fashion would be ideal. After all, the magazines you're interested in writing for cover more than fashion, and you want to be able to demonstrate to potential employers that you've got the broader journalistic skills, that you could write for more than just the fashion section, but that you've also got a specialization in fashion. As far as specific schools, Ithaca College, Syracuse University, UNC-Chapel Hill and St. John Fisher College are good for journalism. You should contact them about minors in fashion.
