How do I get my writing career off the ground?

I have had my poetry published in anthologies and won contests. I just recently started writing short stories and articles. I would like to get started as a freelance writer part time. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get started?

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

Stephen King has a good informational book out called, "On Writing" I highly recommend it.

Answer 2

Get an agent instead of freelance. It really is worth the $$. And congrats on the publications.

Answer 3

Keep hacking away--so to speak--and submit your work to places that publish your kind of stuff. Check out Writers Market for where to send your work. RP

Answer 4

Sell some of your shorts to anthology magazines. I know their golden age has passed, but there are still survivors like "Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine" or "Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine." Or you can try getting an agent to sell a collection of your stories to publishers.
