How do I break into freelance writing?

I have always been a writer at heart but never pursued it. I would love to make it into a career, but Im afraid all I've done is so far (Im 27) is administrative work. How can I update my resume so that employers looking for writers will want to hire me? I know that I will have to start at the bottom and work my way up and I am willing to do that but I just have no idea how to get started. Please help!

Answer 1

Go get a book called the writers market handbook from the library. Get the most recent copy they have. You can find various genres there and will list the markets currently available. It should tell you what they pay, what they are looking for and what style of writing is desired. Once you have the info you want I would try to contact the company. I'd also check for a local writers club, they should be able to help.

Answer 2

Look for your niche first. What kind of writing are you good at? Determining what you are capable of doing is the best first step you can take and what direction to go in. For example, if you have skills in copy writing and content development for web sites or advertisements, market your skills there. If you have a way of speaking to people and interviewing them for feature articles, consider writing for small publications. The same holds true if you are good at writing essays and can do small articles. There is a wide range of opportunities and styles of writing if you go digging for it. I specialize in web content and copy writing primarily but I also dabble in feature articles, press releases, and journalism. http://www.overcaffeinatedandunderpaid.com You can view my site to get an idea of how I market myself and what I do. I have been writing professionally for six years. Avoid accepting article writing where you're paid only $5 per article (especially those that ask for say 10 articles at 500 words). Those are a joke and an insult to writers of all levels of experience. You will need to develop a portfolio of some sort to showcase your work so people know you are capable of writing and have the skills and versatility. Do what you can to get it online via your own site. This helps tremendously in marketing yourself. I can tell you right now that being a writer, especially a freelancer, is not an easy job. You need to work hard at developing your craft and beating out competition (example: me) to show you are the best writer for the job. Once you have established a portfolio and some credibility you can start creating your own rates. This is also not easy as you have to be flexible and understand the market rates per project and the client's needs. I wish you the best of luck. It's a highly competitive field and also not a very lucrative one.

Answer 3

Ok, I suggest going to www.workforgas.com and sending an email to LH (whom is the owner of the site). Ask him if you can write for him since he is looking for writers.
