How can a communications degree be applied to a journalism career?

I'm curious as to how being a communications major can be relevant to journalism. I am aware that communications can be applied to numerous careers, but since I would like to be a writer, I'm wondering how it would be applicable?

Answer 1

One of the best ways to start a career as a writer is to simply write. The specific degree that you hold matters very little as you progress in your career. As someone who has an undergraduate degree in English, and started her career as a television news writer, I can tell you from experience that the most significant boost you can give your career right now is to stop worrying about the degree and start networking with people who can give you freelance gigs and/or a job as a writer. Put a portfolio together and just go after the jobs you want. What type of writing do you want to do?
