You need to study the market that you want to write for, taking note of what they are publishing. Choose something similar, write about it, and submit it. From a freelance writer Answer 2
Make up a one-page resume, make a dozen copies and go to your local newspaper. Find all of the department heads of the editorial departments -- news, zones, business, sports, features -- and take each copies of your resume. Find out if the newspaper has other editorial departments, such as advertising special sections, and take them resumes, too.
If they use freelancers, they'll probably use you.
Remember, you need experience as a writer, and you need to be edited. Look at the stories before and after and learn from the editing. Learn how to write tight and get your point across with few words.
You can stay with newspapers, if you're successful, or you can branch into your chosen field.

Depending on the type of freelance work you want to do there are literally hundreds of websites that can provide you with some really great information. If you are considering ghostwriting however, there is only one website that deals solely with this topic, http://www.ghostwritinguncovered.com .
If it is just freelance writing with the aim of getting your own name published, you will first need to decide exactly what genre you wish to write in, eg, short stories, fiction, non fiction, horror, fantasy, etc. Once you have this accomplished you could check out some freelance writing sites as most of them have magazine listings. You will of course need to learn how to write a query letter as this is your gateway to editors.
