Fashion: is it a viable career?

I have a bachelor's in psychology, a master's in journalism and I'd love to do something in the fashion world...like fashion copywriting/journalism/advertising or buying... I'm considering attending a school for merchandise marketing... 1. Will having more schooling help me get a start in the fashion world? 2. Are there actually any fashion jobs/careers that are viable? Links/Advice Appreciated/Alumni of Fashion Schools-Experiences-Helpful I'm worried about graduating and having no job opps Thanks!

Answer 1

It's totally a viable career, however, I don't think you should keep going to school. Fashion is a really hard industry to get into - no doubt about it. By more and more education up front in your life doesn't make it any easier. The single most important thing to focus on is to get a job, maybe as a junior designer or junior production coordinator in the industry after you're done with your current studies. Work in the industry for 3-4 years. Because once you've done that, you've established credibility to the industry. Then you can power up with another degree in marketing, and when you come out, you'll have a power resume. Its tough getting in the first time - but trust me, take that pain now instead of bulking up too much on education. Hope this helps.
