I mainly want to work in the advertising sector. I want to write ad copy and slogans. I am wondering about the education required for being a copywriter. I am currently a History Major and want to try for copywriting as a career, but I want a fall back. Do you think the skills learned by history would qualify me?
History requires analysis of cultures and changes throughout time, trends that come and go etc. Plus, there is an immense amount of writing involved.

You can more or less have any major to become a copywriter, as long as you have a degree. What's important is you have an impressive portfolio. I would suggest finding a graphic design student and working together with them so that you can present good graphics/art with your work and you can provide them with copy for their portfolios as well.
New York is a great place to find jobs as a copywriter, so if you have an opportunity to look for work there I would highly suggest it. I would also suggest looking into pharmaceutical advertising if you feel you could handle the science. There is a lot of money in it and the field is always looking for writers. It could at the very least be a good starting point. << GO BACK to questions
